Issue 2.2: Healing Across Generations
Living Hyphen is a community that explores the experiences of hyphenated Canadians. I was fortunate to have an article selected for 2.2.
“Rafael Reston. Teofista Ycong. Alphonso Kilantang. Melchora Reston. Romana Ybanez. Vicente Valle. Ponciana Quilantang. Felipe Remo. Oliva Remo Quilantang. Amadeo Ybanez Quilantang.
These are names of the footsteps I follow. To my tongue, they feel like a poem. Before this year, I hadn’t heard of most of them. I’ve never even seen their names written until now. The stories of my ancestors untold, left on the sands they no longer touch. Writing their names only brings up more questions. What did they love to do? What were their dreams? Did they have any rituals or ceremonies? What stories did they tell? Did they hide who they were? I long to know, as if knowing the stories behind the names will help me answer the question, “who am I?”
