Enjoying being a mom to a tween & slowing down

2024 is starting off busy, but not overwhelmingly. I’m shifting my priorities from a solely money-making mindset to focusing on writing more, focusing on larger film projects, being extremely selective with clients, and taking the time to be a mom. Since my kid was born my life has always revolved around him, but everything I was working on was based on survival (some of it trauma coping) and I haven’t quite come down off of the single parent stress despite having a partner now. I’m still learning how.

I’m trying to slow down, stay off social media and appreciate the little things, like making him meals, picking him up from school, attending field trips, listening to his stories, going on walks, reading books and making art collaborations with him. It won’t be long now before he’ll be too cool to hang with his mom and I don’t want to look back and wish I had done things differently.

Producing a few documentaries (some in post), short films and also helping to produce a few narrative films.

Working in the film industry, being a mother and owning your own business are all similar in the sense that you spend a lot of time working on things behind-the-scenes that you don't get paid for. Some ideas will work out and someone will pay you, others, you lose out on and you're forced to pivot. More often than not unbillable hours accumulate. You don't know if you ever will see an ROI or a return on time, and often people don’t think you’re really working if you’re not sharing everything publicly.

Being in business, being a mama and working in the film industry has been almost half my life now, and I'm as uncomfortable as I am comfortable being in it. A good place to be.

What I mean by all this is that I'm working on a few films that take time. Some of these are my own personal projects, and some films I’m working on for others, but in both cases I’m trying to make sure that what I'm working on align with my values and have some deeper meaning behind it all.

I wrote a feature length film that I will direct

I completed the first draft of my first feature length narrative screenplay in 2023 and applied for a grant to (re)write what I believe to be the most important scenes. I am taking my time with this project because it will be my first feature that I will direct and it is a love letter to my first best friend when I came to Canada. As an artist, I often visualize the entire process, feeling it through it's entirety before a work is completed. I am in a second gestation period. I don't want urgency to drive something so special to me.

I’m writing a novel

After my children’s book got picked up a publisher, I started working on a novel that is partly inspired by truth. My aim is for it to be at least 100 pages, which technically makes it a novella, but I’m not limiting myself and am only using the page mark as a guide. It will likely take me 2-3 years to complete based on my track record with my writing projects.

Intimacy Directors & Coordinators Training

I completed Level 1 - Foundations of Intimacy & Consent course and it has profoundly impact the way I wish to navigate as an artist, business person, partner, mother and friend.

This course is a part of IDC’s Consent-Forward Artist (CFA) Certificate Program and I’ll continue to Level 2.
