a project about waste
a collaboration with Gloria Guns
In 2013 and 2014, more than 100 shipping containers were delivered to the Philippines from Canada by a private Canadian company. There was about 2,500 tons of household waste that were said to be recyclable materials, but instead included plastic bottles and used adult diapers in containers sitting in the town of Capas, north of Manila. It wasn’t until 2019 when Duterte demanded that the garbage be returned back to Canada.
This performance was performed in multiple venues in 2015-2016 and ran for about 2.5-3.5 hours, as a response to this growing problem and as a way to create an awareness about global waste and plastic pollution.
In 2015, Mailyne made a commitment for one year to try to live zero waste. During that time, she blogged about her journey and by the end of the year she had made one jar of garbage. It was this commitment and one jar of garbage that became the foundation of the live art performance.
The Materials:
The materials used during each performance varied slightly but mostly comprised of the garbage from the jar collected over the year, found materials, raw cotton muslin, beet juice, turmeric, chlorophyll, coffee, tiny bit of acrylic paint that was already in the artist’s possession and homemade, biodegradable glue.

Gloria found sound bytes from various news interviews and created an original track that she performed live during the painting process.
